Stop Wishing. Start Achieving.
Fool Proof Framework Included
Have you ever set a goal for yourself but struggled to see it through to completion?
I know I have.
More than I’d like to admit.
It can be demoralizing and disheartening.
Especially if it's a pattern that keeps repeating itself.
There is nothing worse for your self esteem.
It’s crushing.
We set big goals with the best intentions.
Yet soon find ourselves struggling to make any real progress.
But what if there was a way to change all that?
The benefits of achieving your goals are well worth the work it takes:
Increased happiness
Self-confidence will skyrocket
Life becomes so much more fun
Opportunities will open up
Future outlook on life will improve
The truth is, setting goals is easy.
The hard part is following through on them.
Without a plan in place, our goals become nothing more than wishes.
But not all plans are created equal.
Some are guaranteed to fail because they don’t include vital components of a bullet-proof goal-setting framework.
So, what's the solution?
The three-part framework: Design, Habits, and Follow-Through.
If you don’t have a vision. Nothing happens.
Design: Start by having a vision.
Failing take this step is like getting in your car without a map or any clue where you are going.
This is what the majority do.
It is also the express lane to mediocrity.
You will wander aimlessly through life by default.
Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen to you by defining your ideal lifestyle.
Answer this question:
“What would be the coolest thing that could happen within the next five years of your life?”
Forget just ‘being realistic’ or what anyone else may think.
This is about what YOU want.
Just doing this one thing will put you miles ahead of people who just show up and go through the motions everyday.
Make it conscious and concrete, not just superficial.
Then, break down your long-term vision into an annual timeline and ask yourself what the best thing that could happen this year is.
Again don’t be realistic.
Perfect case scenario, what does it look like?
Write it down.
In the next section we will add your daily habits to this document - (the ones designed to move the needle in the direction you want).
Once we are done you will put it up somewhere visible and review it every day, twice a day.
Motivation gets you started. HABIT keeps you going.
Habits: Break down your goal into daily habits.
Before you proceed with habits - understand this:
Adopt the identity.
Want to workout more? You are an athlete.
Stop smoking? You are not a smoker.
Read more? You are a reader.
There is no “I am trying to do X or quit Y”.
You simply do or do not, as the wise old green little person from Star Wars said.
Capiche?
Good.
Let’s move on.
For example, if the goal is to lose 40lbs:
We can break it down like this - make a habit of going to the gym for 20 minutes four times a week and cooking every day.
If you are like me, and aim to build a 10k+ Twitter following:
Make a habit of posting valuable content three times a day and engaging with the community for at least 20 minutes twice a day.
Use the 3x3 formula
By now you are probably excited to make all sorts of changes and completely reinvent yourself.
Not so fast.
Three goals per year maximum and three habits per goal maximum.
Any more than this and you are wasting your time.
Track your progress using a weekly scorecard document.
In golf as in life, it’s the follow through that makes the difference.
Follow-Through: Make sure you actually do these things.
Follow little intuitions on when you have to pivot.
Every night, ask yourself if you did what you were supposed to do and where you can improve.
